September 2022 Newsletter: WJEC GCE Health and Social Care and Childcare

We hope you have had a relaxing break over the summer and that you and your learners are feeling ready for the new term.

We have some general and subject-specific updates and information that you may need as you begin this new academic year.

Arrangements for Summer 2023

Externally Assessed Units 1, 3 and 5

As announced by Qualifications Wales in May 2022, WJEC will be providing Advanced Information (AI) for written external assessments. This will be released in the spring term and will follow a very similar format to previous series. To reiterate, this is to help focus learners’ revision, with the aim of covering all specification content in teaching and learning of these externally assessed units.

Internally Assessed Units 2, 4 and 6

The adaptations as published for Summer 2022 are now not applicable to these units, with all adaptations now not being applicable to the Summer 2023 series.

Resources

We have produced some additional resources which you may not have seen:

(i) Textbooks covering the full specification can be purchased online on Amazon:

  • Units 1 and 2 here
  • Units 3 and 4 here
  • Units 5 and 6 here

(ii) Log on to the WJEC secure website to access previous CPD resources. Here you will find lots of additional support materials designed for teachers to aid delivery of the qualification.

(iii) Exam and NEA Walk-Throughs – written by Subject Officers, Principal Examiners and Principal Moderators. Aimed at learners, these materials offer practical hints and tips on how to effectively approach questions in examination papers and preparing for NEA. The PPTs with audio help and audio script in the notes will ‘walk learners through’ a mock examination paper, helping them revise and practise useful exam techniques and provide a step-by-step guide to preparing and presenting NEA work. Learners can ‘walk through’ each PPT in a single sitting, tackle one or two sections at a time or revisit some parts of the presentation to reinforce learning.

(iv) Knowledge Organisers – very useful for content delivery or revision for learners, or as a useful starting point for teachers to create their own knowledge organisers.

(v) We also have a comprehensive list of resources, which are mapped across the Health and Social Care and Childcare suite, which can be very useful if you are teaching qualifications across the suite.

Professional Learning

We are delighted to be offering face-to-face full day CPD in Autumn 2022 – these will be expert-led interactive sessions. We are looking forward to seeing you all and being able to give you feedback on the 2022 series, highlight the good practice we have seen and advise you on delivery, marking of assessments and sharing resources. There is also an online alternative option for those who prefer this medium or are unable to attend the face-to-face sessions.

Booking is open via the HCLW website

Summer 2022 series – the Principal Examiner/Principal moderator reports are now available online, and we highly recommend you read these carefully (and your centre reports available on results day) as they offer helpful observations and commentary on candidates’ performance this series that could help future learners moving forward.

Have a good term and we look forward to seeing some of you, face to face, at CPD.
